Hindraf Makkal Sakthi chairman P Waythamoorthy is seeing red on a Barisan Nasional (BN) friendly party, clad in orange, and allegedly misleading the public on Bersih 5.
“The people should not be deceived by Malaysia Makkal Sakthi Party (MMSP) ‘endorsing’ the Red Shirts,” he stressed in a statement. We condemn the ‘busybody’ Red Shirts in no uncertain terms,” he said, adding that Barisan Nasional (BN) had sponsored MMSP to hijack “Makkal Sakthi” for sinister purposes.
“It’s turning up in orange, ‘behind’ the Red Shirts, and using our battle cry to oppose Bersih 5.”
Waythamoorthy reiterated that Hindraf was not against Bersih 5.
“We support their objectives. Indians will never support the racist Red Shirts. Hindraf is about ‘urimai’ (‘rights’ in Tamil).”
He explained that Makkal Sakthi means “people power” in Tamil.
“Hindraf first used the term on Nov 25, 2007,” Waytha said.
“That’s when 100,000 people took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur, in a spontaneous uprising of the marginalised, in orange.”
The Hindraf chief, who was briefly in the Senate and appointed a deputy minister in the prime minister’s department after the last general election, recalled that it was in fact Barisan Nasional which had sponsored MMSP to hijack the “makkal sakthi” battle cry and Hindraf’s orange colour theme.
He expressed concern that many people invariably link MMSP with Hindraf because the former uses the words “makkal sakthi” as well
“To rub it in”, he lamented, MMSP is turning up in orange behind the Red Shirts.
“It should hold Najib to his ‘nambikkei’ (trust) promises instead of echoing the Red Shirts.”
