Karachi, January 26: Pakistan’s Sikh community has demanded a Senate seat be reserved for their community in the upcoming elections.
“We currently have no representative in the National Assembly or in the Sindh Assembly,” the Express Tribune quoted Sikh Naujwan Sabha Pakistan Chairperson Sardar Ramesh Singh, as saying.
Christian representative Michael Javed pointed out that the Pakistan government has not yet implemented its decision to reserve five percent of government jobs for non-Muslims.
“Minorities are not being appointed on the seats reserved for them-and those who are appointed after a struggle, are discriminated against and treated very harshly by others,” he said.
He also said that he was disappointed on learning that newly-appointed minorities’ secretary has not yet been given at the secretariat.
“The minorities’ secretary has not been given an office at the secretariat. He sits in a dingy corner at the excise barrack, and has no proper place to carry out his office work,” Javed said.
